Auriga is an astronomy project focussed on using computer simulations to understand the formation and evolution of spiral galaxies like the Milky Way. It simulates the physics that we believe are important for star and galaxy formation from moments just after the Big Bang until the present day. We then watch how our Universe in a computer evolves, and inspect how and when galaxies like ours unfolded like a Cosmic tapestry. A bit more technical
The Auriga Project is a large suite of high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way-sized galaxies, simulated in a fully cosmological environment by means of the 'zoom-in' technique. It is simulated with the state-of-the-art hydrodynamic moving mesh code AREPO, and includes a comprehensive galaxy formation model based on the successful cosmological simulation Illustris.
