Christkindlemarkt: What to drink

A must-have drink during your visit on the market is the typical mulled wine. In German it is called “Glühwein” - ‘Glühen’ is the german word for ‘glowing’ and, indeed, this red wine is hot and mixed with herbs and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, star aniseed and citrus. This lends it a sweet taste and warms you up during a cold night outside.

There are several variations of the Glühwein available: those with additional fruit taste (e.g. “Heidelbeer” (blueberries), “Kirsch” (cherry)  or occasionally “Met” (honey wine)), or mulled wine made from white wine, which is slightly less sweet (“Weißer Glühwein”).

Beware, that the Glühwein is a wine and is therefore alcoholic! If you are looking for something with a similar flavour but non-alcoholic, then you can go for “Kinderpunsch”.

If — on the other hand — you want a little bit more alcohol, the “Feuerzangenbowle” (german for “fire-tongs punch”) might be just the drink for you: for it, a rum-soaked sugarloaf is set on fire and drips into mulled wine.
