Irina Zhuravleva received her PhD in Astrophysics from the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in 2011, working with Rashid Sunyaev and Eugene Churazov. The main focus of her work is the physics of
hot gas in galaxy clusters and in particular observational signatures of the gas motions. In 2012, she joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral researcher. She continues to collaborate with MPA
scientists on several projects in the general area of high energy astrophysics.
The Max Planck Society honors up to 30 young scientists and researchers each year with the Otto Hahn Medal for outstanding scientific achievements since 1978. The prize is intended to motivate
especially gifted junior scientists and researchers to pursue a future career at a university or in research. Since 1978, more than 800 scientists and researchers have been awarded the Otto Hahn
Medal, which comes with a monetary sum of 7500 Euros as recognition. The award was presented to the young researchers during the MPG general meeting in June 2013.
