Trains to Munich usually stop at Munich central station (Hauptbahnhof) or Ostbahnhof.

Take any S-Bahn to MARIENPLATZ at the city center, change to subway line "U6" (direction north - Garching-Forschungszentrum). Get off at the end stop and exit the subway in southward direction. The Karl-Schwarzschild-Straße meets the Boltzmannstraße at its south-east end. (It takes approx. 30 minutes from Marienplatz to Garching Forschungszentrum)

Munich airport is located about 30 km north of Munich and about 15 km north of the Garching research area. From there you can get to MPA on two ways.

Taxi: cabs are located just outside the terminals (ground level); costs are about 25 euro; duration depends on traffic and ranges from 15 to 30 minutes.

Public transportation: Munich airport has its own S-Bahn stop (city train - line no. S8 terminal (underground level). Follow the symbols showing a white S in a green circle. Trains leave every 20 minutes at all times of air traffic. You exit in ISMANING (third station, reached after 13 minutes) and change to bus 230. The bus station is at S-Bahn station Ismaning. The bus schedule is less frequent than that of the S-Bahn, but you won't have to wait more than 20 minutes for the next bus to leave. The bus connects Ismaning with the research area (Forschungsinstitute) just north of Garching. After leaving Garching it heads north on state route B11, which it exits after 2 km at a traffic light to the right. It then follows the road for 1 km before there is a sharp turn to the left. Right after this bend is bus stop BOLTZMANN-Straße, reached after 15 minutes. Here you exit and back to the corner. Take a left (you will see a lot of construction and past this, a parking lot and two buildings). On the right hand side is ESO and straight ahead you see our building.

It is also possible (but takes longer and is more expensive - see information at the ticket machine) to take the S-Bahn (line no. S8) to downtown Munich. From here, change at MARIENPLATZ to Underground line 6, (direction north - Garching-Forschungszentrum). Get off at the end stop and exit the subway in southward direction. The Karl-Schwarzschild-Straße meets the Boltzmannstraße at its south-east end.
