Emmi Meyer-Hofmeister was staff member at the MPA for many years, now senior associate scientist. Early work in theory of stellar structure and evolution in the group of Rudolf Kippenhahn. Following work on stellar pulsations, evolution of binary stars, common envelope evolution. Together with Friedrich Meyer basic contributions to the understanding of the outbursts of dwarf novae caused by the ionization instability in accretion disks. The study of accretion processes in close binary stars led to work on accretion in X-ray binaries and supermassive black holes.
