Network Postdoctoral Fellows In December 1995 the Network published the following advertisement for postdoctoral fellows. POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS IN ASTROPHYSICS: European Network for Research on the Formation and Evolution of Galaxies. As part of its current Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme it is expected that the European Commission will provide four year funding for a research network dedicated to studying the formation and evolution of galaxies. This network will link the following six astronomical institutions. --Max-Planck Institut fuer Astrophysik, Garching bei Muenchen, Germany. --Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, UK. --Department of Physics, University of Durham, UK. --Leiden Observatory, Leiden, The Netherlands. --Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Padova, Italy. --Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris, Paris, France. The principal research topics addressed by the network will be: the identification, photometry and spectroscopy of distant radio galaxies; optical and near-IR studies of field galaxies, particularly faint and distant objects; the evolution of high redshift clusters and their galaxy populations; gas in and around young galaxies as seen in quasar absorption lines; models for the evolution of stellar populations in galaxies; phenomenological models for galaxy formation and evolution; numerical simulations of the formation of galaxies and galaxy clusters. As part of this programme it is planned that six two-year postdoctoral positions will be available from late summer 1996, one at each of the above institutes. According to the rules of the TMR programme, these posts are open only to nationals of a European Union country other than that in which the post is held. Applicants should also be under 36 years of age, and should not have been resident in the country where they propose to work for more than 18 months in the two years before the start of the post. Salary at each institution is paid in accordance with the local regulations for postdoctoral positions. Applications should be sent to the address below by February 2 1996, and should include a full curriculum vitae, a publication list, a summary of current research interests, and a list of the institutes at which the applicant would prefer/would be willing to work. Three letters of reference are required by this same date. Applications from women and minorities are particularly welcome. European Network Appointments Committee A combined committee of all the partners examined the applications received in response to this advertisement, and after further consultation with participating scientists at each of the sites the following two year appointments were made: Cambridge: Bianca Poggianti Durham: Fabio Governato Garching: Itziar Aretxaga Leiden: Philip Best Padova: Yuen Ng Paris: Malcolm Bremer All these scientists took up their posts in the latter half on 1996. In late 1997 a slightly altered version of the above advertisement was widely distributed again, in order to recruit postdocs for the second half of the Network's programme. The pool of applications was reviewed by the Responsible Scientists of all sites, who ranked the candidates in consultation with other local network researchers. As a result of this exercise the following two-year appointments, beginning in late 1998 or early 1999, were made: Cambridge: Pierre-Alain Duc Durham: Sergio Gelato Garching: Tom Theuns Leiden: Philip Best (a 2 year extension) Padova: Herve Aussel Paris: Steve Hatton The five network fellows whose contracts terminated ALL moved on to permanent or long-term posts in astronomy.
