You should use fftw2 to compile gadget.
You can find it here
http://www.fftw.org/download.html
Under "fftw 2.1.5"
Then follow the instructions provided by Jared.
Also the gadget guide (
http://wwwmpa.mpa-garching.mpg.de/gadget/users-guide.pdf , page 4) explains
the options needed to compile it.
