Outputting local number density data

Dear all,

I looking at a way to calculate the number density for each particle and finding the maximum number density during the simulation. At the moment I have currently written a program in IDL that does this for the snapshots, however this takes a very long time to due to such large particle numbers involved and would like to find a better way. Is there a straight forward way of outputting the number density of particles in a similar way to the energy data so that I could plot the density against time. I’m aware that Gadget2 code calculates the local number density for gas particles in density.c but I want to calculate for non-gas particles, I then want to output the maximum number density for a given time step. Any help on how to set this up or go about it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Phil
