I have now increased both PartAllocFactor and TreeAllocFactor and it works (so
far). The gas density seemed to have been getting too high, which makes things
intractable (too refined tree).

Thanks for the (quick/constructive) help, (and thanks to Yves Revaz who also
pointed that out to me)
