Stellar Populations and their Explosions: Bridging the Gap
Nov 10 - Nov 14 2025
Schloss Ringberg, Tegernsee (Germany)
Stars and their final explosions are of pivotal importance for the evolution of the universe as producers of heavy chemical elements and as birth sites of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, which play a role as sources of gravitational waves and as important laboratories for nuclear, neutrino, and beyond-standard-model particle physics.
Although stellar and supernova theory and numerical simulations have achieved great progress, the links between the stellar populations of single stars, binaries, and multiple systems and their final destinies are still largely unclear.
With the high-precision data of ESA's Gaia mission, new observational facilities such as JWST, the Vera Rubin Observatory, and transient surveys in new wavebands like the upcoming Israeli-German ULTRASAT UV satellite, a flood of new data can be expected. Harvesting this wealth of information for shrinking the gap between stellar evolution scenarios and their terminal events requires interdisciplinary expertise. Therefore, this workshop aims at enhancing the knowledge exchange and closer collaboration of researchers, theorists and observers, from the relevant fields that are crucial for the theoretical understanding and numerical modeling of the associated phenomena:
- stellar evolution,
- stellar explosions,
- binary mergers,
- nuclear and neutrino physics,
- nucleosynthesis.
Online application will be opened early in June. A web link will be provided in a second announcement shortly before.
Preliminary information:
The workshop is planned to start on Monday after lunch and to end on Friday with the dinner. Arrival on Sunday and departure on Saturday will be possible. The number of participants is limited to about 60. There will be no registration fee, but participants are expected to pay for their accommodation and meals on the Castle (currently 162,61 Euros incl. VAT per day for full board plus conference service; for detailed fees, see here) The rooms will be reserved by the organisers for all accepted participants.

Venue
The workshop will be held on Ringberg Castle, 50 km south of Munich. It offers full-board accommodation and an inspiring atmosphere for intense communication, particularly fruitful for workshops.

Travel to Ringberg - Important logistical information
- TRAVEL from Munich airport (MUC) to Ringberg Castle is
easy by train. Enter the S-Bahn from the airport to Munich Hbf
(= Munich Hauptbahnhof/main station). Either of the two lines
(S8 or S1) takes you there within 45 min to 60 min, depending
on the line.
Tickets (the best choice for your needs is a one-way ticket) are available at the ticket machines near the airport exit or in the train station of the airport.
Arriving at Munich Hauptbahnhof/Hbf, change to "Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB)" line RB 57, which takes you to Tegernsee about twice every hour. Here is the webpage: where you can also buy tickets.
The train schedule is attached. Make sure you check the connections for the correct day (either weekdays or Saturdays or Sundays). The ride to Tegernsee station takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. From there, take a taxi to Ringberg Castle (Schloss Ringberg) or to your hotel. - Business on Ringberg Castle on Sundays starts at about 4 p.m. If you arrive earlier, please ring the bell at the Castle's main door. The manager told me that you will be let in.
- We have the possibility to place a few posters in the area in front of the lecture room. Everyone has a talk slot, but if you wish to also bring a poster, there will be space to put it up.
