International Year of Astronomy 2009

Activities of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics

400 years ago the Italian physicist Galileo Galilei used a telescope to study the sky for the first time and made a number of important discoveries about the Moon and the planets. Also in 1609 Johannes Kepler published his "Astronomia nova", an epoch-making book on our solar system. In remembrance of these milestones in the history of astronomy the United Nations proclaimed the year 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). The Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA) has initiated a variety of regional and supra-regional projects with the objective of getting children and grown-ups interested in astrophysics and astronomy.
